Trip to Portugal - Day 3 - Wednesday, January 15, 2020 -Evora

We had a great night's sleep and were ready to take on Evora today. We opted out of the hotel breakfast that wasn't included anyway and went to a little pasteleria that is a block from our hotel. Our breakfast was a cup of tea and some of the Portuguese special pastries. They really didn't disappoint. From there we headed to Giraldo Square and then ventured out to find the Roman Aqueducts and the walls of the city. It is so impressive how these constructions have continued to stand for all these years. From there it was on to the ruins of the Roman Temple built for the goddess Diana in the 1st century. We were also treated to a panoramic view of the town. Then it was on to the Cathedral and a truly awesome view from the rooftop. The building and its history were magnificent. We were allowed to go to the tower, the convent and the cathedral itself. Wow! We stopped along the way for lunch and had some local fare - empadas - meat or veggie stuffed tarts and bought some local pastries to have later. Then we went to the church of Sao Francisco. It was beautiful. Next on the tour was the bone chapel. Yuck too macabre for my taste. Then a truly awesome display of pesebres (nativity scenes). Another church we saw was Our Lady of Grace.  This was much more simple since its altar and artifacts had been plundered earlier. Along the way we stopped for a tea and ate the pastries from earlier. We also had a glass of wine before we came back to the hotel. Ron rested while I did some blogging. For dinner we went to a place that was suggested for having typical Evoran meals - Cafe Alentejo. Ron had Acorda. It was a broth of olive oil, garlic, parsley, vinegar, and green peppers. Then it came with bread chunks,  a huge piece of cod fish and a poached egg. I had a salad and duck rice. Along with our red wine and Sagres beer it was a perfect meal. The weather has been very good to us also. There was a 70 % chance of rain today and we received only a sprinkle before we went into the museum and that was it. I think I just have to carry my umbrella all day to ward off the rain. The temperature was a mild 60. We say goodbye to Evora tomorrow and it's on to the coast and the Algarve.

** Not sure what happened but lost many of our pictures from our first days in Evora. Ron says that's not as bad as leaving a passport behind in the hotel though.
